Question: What is the average starting pay scale for a heavy equipment operator on a road crew or construction site?

In California $27per hour on you check with vacation pay medical and retirement it is around $42 total... 30 years as a operating engineer local #3

It all depends on what state and union or not. Non-union starts at minimum wage, $7-$10. Union starts apprentices usually at 50% scale, so around $17, plus you get benefits in the union, like health care, vacation pay and a pension fund.
