Question: Do you have to have a driver's license to be a heavy equipment operator?

Do you have to have a driver's license to be a heavy equipment operator? My boyfriend does not have a driver's license but he wants to be a heavy equipment operator. Is that possible?

A drivers license is not required by law, but he will need to trained and have a license/ certified (required by insurance not law) for the equipment he will be using. But many employers will require a DL or CDL for employment. have him contact a heavy equipment dealer for whats common in your area. CDL is for Commercial trucks operated on public roads. since bulldozers and the like are not operated on public roads, no DL is required by law.

Yes you must have drivers lic. and you have to have a heavy equipment operators license as well.

You needs a CDL Commercial Drivers License along with a license permitting to operate such machinery.Have him get his drivers license first and then he can go for the other ones.They have schools for getting a CDL.At the very least he needs a CLASS A CDL

No you did have to have a drivers licenses to operator heavy equipment,so companies will give you there own test ,before you can operator there equipment. He should go for it , because they pay pretty good

If the equipment is not being driven on public roads there is no requirement for a driver's license. Why would there be? And if you are operating this equipment on you own property ( ie. farm ) you don't need an operators license either. However, if you work for a contractor or hire yourself out you must have a heavy equipment ticket.
